COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mechatronics Engineering program at Waterloo integrates mechanical, electrical, computer, and systems engineering, equipping students to design intelligent electromechanical systems. Beginning with foundational courses in calculus, linear algebra, chemistry, circuits, statics, and programming, students build a strong base in engineering principles. As the program progresses, they explore dynamics, materials science, digital logic, sensors, instrumentation, control systems, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, actuators, and machine design. Advanced topics include real-time systems, power electronics, microprocessor interfacing, and automatic control. Students complete major design projects in their final year, gaining hands-on experience in mechatronic system development. Throughout the degree, seminars complement academic learning with professional development. Ethics is emphasized through courses like PD22 or PHIL315. Students must complete five technical electives from an extensive list including robotics, AI, embedded systems, CAD, MEMS, control systems, and biomedical design. Electives allow specialization in areas such as autonomous systems, manufacturing, or digital hardware. The program also incorporates co-op work terms, providing up to two years of paid industry experience, enabling students to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts. With a rigorous curriculum and interdisciplinary focus, graduates are well-prepared for careers in robotics, aerospace, automotive, and advanced manufacturing, capable of designing and leading the development of next-generation intelligent systems.
