COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mechanical Engineering program at Waterloo offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to build a strong foundation in engineering principles and practical skills. In the first year, students complete courses in chemistry, linear algebra, calculus, physics, and introductory mechanical engineering practice, alongside electives. The second year deepens this foundation with advanced calculus, statistics, mechanics of solids, control of material properties, and electromechanical devices, supplemented by approved electives. The third year emphasizes advanced engineering mathematics, dynamics, manufacturing, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, control systems, and design workshops, while continuing seminars and electives. In the final year, students engage in interdisciplinary or mechanical engineering design projects and select multiple approved electives to tailor their expertise. Ethics is integrated through courses such as Professionalism and Ethics in Engineering Practice or Ethics and the Engineering Profession. Additionally, students must complete seven technical electives from two lists, covering specialized topics like building energy analysis, welding, fatigue analysis, robotics, combustion, fluid dynamics, and mechatronics, or more advanced subjects including quantum mechanics, algorithm design, machine learning, and cognitive ergonomics. This rigorous curriculum equips graduates with theoretical knowledge, hands-on experience, and ethical awareness, preparing them for diverse engineering careers and leadership in innovation across industries.
