COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geological Engineering program at Waterloo is designed to provide a comprehensive education blending civil engineering principles with geosciences, preparing students to address complex environmental and engineering challenges. Starting in 1A and 1B terms, students complete foundational courses including chemistry, mechanics, calculus, communication, electrical circuits, and computational methods, along with introductory environmental and geological engineering concepts. In 2A and 2B, the focus shifts to structural geology, mineralogy, stratigraphy, applied geophysics, solid mechanics, and advanced calculus, supplemented by seminars and approved electives. The program emphasizes hands-on learning through fieldwork and practical seminars like geological mapping, and continues to build advanced skills in sedimentology, rock mechanics, engineering geology, and hydrology in later years. Students undertake two major design projects in 4A and 4B terms, alongside seminars and electives in geotechnical engineering, law, and ethics, rounding out their expertise. Technical electives cover a wide range of specialized topics such as petroleum production, structural design, environmental engineering, geochemistry, hydrogeology, geophysics, and waste management, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests. This robust curriculum, combined with practical experience and a focus on sustainability, equips graduates with the skills to safely manage natural resources, infrastructure, and environmental risks using the latest technologies and engineering practices.
