COURSE CURRICULUM

The Electrical Engineering program at Waterloo offers a rigorous curriculum combining foundational knowledge with hands-on learning and specialized electives. In your first year, you'll study classical mechanics, programming, calculus, and linear algebra, along with introductory engineering practice and communication. As you progress, you'll dive into topics such as electromagnetism, digital circuits, electronics, algorithms, signals and systems, semiconductor devices, control systems, and electromagnetic fields. Lab work and project studios provide practical, team-based experience early on. Courses like Probability, Communication Systems, and Embedded Systems round out the core technical base. You'll complete eight technical electives, with opportunities to explore fields like power systems, machine learning, robotics, computer networks, software design, quantum mechanics, and more. Some electives can be taken from other engineering departments, encouraging interdisciplinary learning. You’ll also complete a two-term design project in your final year, allowing you to tackle real-world problems. Breadth is emphasized through required ethics, natural sciences, and non-engineering electives, giving you a well-rounded education.
