COURSE CURRICULUM

The Civil Engineering program at Waterloo is designed to equip students with the foundational knowledge and practical skills needed to address complex infrastructure challenges. In the first year, students complete essential courses in chemistry, mechanics, calculus, linear algebra, and communication, establishing a strong engineering foundation. The second year builds on this with advanced courses in solid mechanics, transport principles, materials science, probability, and fluid mechanics, along with seminars and electives. In the third year, students delve into structural analysis, project management, transportation engineering, geotechnical engineering, and hydrology, complemented by electives and seminars. The final year focuses on comprehensive civil engineering design projects, engineering law, ethics, and further electives, preparing students for professional practice. Throughout the program, students select natural science courses such as biology, chemistry, geology, or environmental sciences to broaden their understanding of related fields. Additionally, seven technical electives allow students to specialize in areas like structural design, geotechnical engineering, urban water systems, biomechanics, and environmental engineering. These electives are drawn from two lists, providing flexibility to tailor studies according to career interests. This comprehensive curriculum combines theoretical knowledge, practical design experience, and interdisciplinary learning, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to create, manage, and sustain vital infrastructure in an evolving world.
