COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Statistics (thesis option) is a graduate program designed to provide advanced training in statistical theory, methods, and applied research. It combines structured coursework with independent research leading to a formal master’s thesis. Students are required to complete 1.5 units of MATH585 (Seminar), which is mandatory and provides exposure to current research developments and professional discussions in mathematics and statistics. A key component of the program is STAT599, a 6.0-unit Master’s Thesis, where students conduct original research under faculty supervision and defend their work in a final oral examination. In addition, students must complete 4.5 units of MATH or STAT courses at the 500 level, which provide advanced knowledge in statistical theory and applications. They must also complete 3.0 units of MATH or STAT courses at the 400 level or above to ensure a strong foundational and intermediate understanding of statistical concepts. With approval from the supervisory committee, students may take relevant courses from other departments if they support their research goals. The program emphasizes analytical thinking, data interpretation, and rigorous research skills. Overall, it prepares graduates for careers in data science, healthcare, government, research, and academia, as well as for further doctoral-level study in statistics and related quantitative fields.
