COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Physics with a concentration in Ocean Physics is a research-focused graduate program that integrates core physics training with specialized study of oceanic systems. Students are required to participate in PHYS560 (Colloquium), which exposes them to current research developments and fosters academic discussion within the department. The central component of the program is the MSc thesis (PHYS599), worth 7.5 to 9.0 units, where students conduct original research related to ocean physics under faculty supervision. To build a strong theoretical foundation, students must complete either PHYS500A (Quantum Mechanics) or PHYS502A (Classical Electrodynamics). In addition, students are required to complete 4.5 units of coursework, with at least 3.0 units selected from graduate-level Physics (PHYS) or Earth and Ocean Sciences (EOS) courses, allowing flexibility to tailor studies toward topics such as ocean circulation, fluid dynamics, or climate-related processes. This interdisciplinary approach equips students with both physical and environmental science expertise. The program concludes with a final oral examination, during which students defend their thesis and demonstrate their understanding of their research area. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in oceanography, climate science, environmental research, or further doctoral studies.
