COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Biochemistry and Microbiology is a research-focused graduate program that emphasizes both advanced scientific training and independent thesis-based research. Unlike project-based master’s programs, this degree is centred on laboratory research and scholarly development under the supervision of a faculty advisor. Students are required to complete a set of core graduate courses designed to strengthen critical thinking, scientific communication, and research skills. These include BCMB 500 (Critical Thinking in Biochemistry and Microbiology), which develops analytical approaches to scientific problems, BCMB 501 (Essentials of Scientific Writing), which focuses on effective academic writing and publication skills, and BCMB 502 (Journal Club I), which involves reviewing and discussing current scientific literature. In addition, students must complete BCMB 580, a research seminar course where they present their own work, actively participate in seminars by peers and faculty, and receive formal evaluation based on their performance. The central component of the program is MICR 599, the MSc thesis, which involves conducting original, in-depth research that contributes new knowledge to the fields of biochemistry or microbiology. Depending on the supervisory committee’s guidance, students may also be required to take additional graduate-level courses to support their research focus. Overall, the program prepares students for careers in scientific research, biotechnology, healthcare, or further doctoral studies through rigorous academic training and hands-on research experience.
