COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Mathematics is a research-oriented graduate program that combines advanced coursework, seminars, and independent research leading to a thesis. Students are required to complete a structured set of academic components designed to strengthen both theoretical knowledge and research ability in mathematics and statistics. The program includes 1.5 units of MATH585 (Seminar), which is mandatory and provides exposure to current research topics and scholarly discussion within the mathematical sciences. Students must also complete MATH599, a 6.0-unit Master’s Thesis, which represents the central focus of the degree and involves original research conducted under faculty supervision, culminating in a formal oral defense. In addition, students are required to complete 4.5 units of MATH or STAT courses at the 500 level, ensuring advanced training in specialized mathematical areas. A further 3.0 units of MATH or STAT courses at the 400 level or above are also required to provide broader academic depth. With approval from the supervisory committee, students may include relevant courses from other departments if appropriate to their research goals. The program emphasizes independent thinking, rigorous analysis, and scholarly communication. Overall, it prepares graduates for doctoral studies and careers in research, academia, data science, and other fields requiring advanced mathematical expertise.
