COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MSc) in Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria is a research-intensive graduate program designed to develop advanced understanding of environmental issues through interdisciplinary study and independent research. The program includes core courses such as ES500 and ES501, which introduce environmental theories, methods, and research skills, along with a research colloquium (ES503) that supports academic discussion and development of research ideas. Students also complete ES593, which focuses on preparing a formal thesis proposal under the guidance of a supervisory committee. The central requirement of the degree is ES599, a 7.5-unit thesis that involves original research and contributes new knowledge in the field of environmental studies. In addition to core requirements, students complete 3.0 units of electives chosen with supervisor approval, with a limit on 400-level coursework. The program also includes a mandatory three-day field camp at the beginning of the first term, providing hands-on training in environmental field methods. While there is no strict residency requirement, students are generally expected to be in residence during the first term and are encouraged to remain on campus during the first year. The thesis is developed under close faculty supervision and is defended before a committee, ensuring rigorous academic and research standards.
