COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s program in Computer Science at the University of Victoria offers both thesis-based and project-based study options, allowing students to choose a path aligned with their academic or professional goals. In the thesis-based option, students complete a combination of advanced graduate coursework and a significant research thesis under the supervision of a faculty member. The minimum course requirements include 1.5 units of 400- or 500-level Computer Science courses and 4.5 units of 500-level courses, along with CSC595 (Research Skills) and CSC599 (Master’s Thesis). The thesis component typically carries 6.0 to 7.5 units and requires students to conduct original research and defend their work in an oral examination. Students are also expected to meet departmental breadth requirements and may take limited directed studies courses with approval. Many students also gain valuable experience through teaching assistant or research assistant roles during their studies.In the project-based option, students complete 3 units of 400- or 500-level courses and 7.5 units of 500-level courses, along with CSC595 (Research Skills) and CSC598 (Master’s Project). This pathway focuses more on applied problem-solving and industry-oriented work rather than extended research. Both options typically take about two years to complete, with possible extensions for students participating in co-op programs. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in research, industry, and advanced technical roles in computing.
