COURSE CURRICULUM

This MSc program in Biology (with a pathway to PhD for strong students) is a full-time, research-based graduate degree focused on advanced biological research and thesis work. Students entering with a BSc begin in the MSc program, but may be considered for transfer into the PhD program after the first year, depending on the recommendation of their supervisory committee and approval from the Department of Biology and the Dean of Graduate Studies. The program emphasizes independent, supervised research leading to a substantial thesis, supported by a small amount of required coursework. Students must complete BIOL 560, the Annual Biology Graduate Symposium, which provides an opportunity to present research progress and engage with the broader academic community. The central requirement is BIOL 599, the thesis component, which carries the majority of the credit weight and involves original research contributing new knowledge in biology. In addition, students complete 3 units of graduate-level coursework selected in consultation with their supervisor to support their research specialization and strengthen theoretical or methodological skills. For students specializing in Forest Biology, there is an additional requirement of FORB 560, a Forest Biology Seminar that focuses on research discussion and field-specific topics. Overall, the program is highly research-intensive and prepares students for advanced scientific careers, doctoral studies, and leadership roles in biological and environmental sciences.
