COURSE CURRICULUM

The Co-op/Thesis Master of Public Administration (MPA) program is a professionally oriented graduate degree designed to develop strong competencies in public sector governance, policy analysis, leadership, and applied research. The program requires a total of 18.0 units and integrates academic coursework with experiential learning through co-op placements and a major thesis. Core courses include Government and Governance, Economics for Policy Analysis, Public Financial Management and Accountability, Public Sector Research Methods, Leadership, Management and Ethics, and Policy-making and Policy Communities. Students also complete a co-op seminar that prepares them for professional practice, along with approved elective courses that allow specialization in areas of interest within public administration. A key feature of the program is the completion of at least two co-op work terms, with an optional third, providing students with hands-on experience in government or policy-related organizations. These practical placements enhance their ability to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world administrative settings. The program culminates in a 6.0-unit master’s thesis (ADMN 599), which involves original research on a public administration issue and contributes to policy or management understanding. The combination of rigorous coursework, applied co-op experience, and independent research ensures that graduates are well prepared for leadership roles in public service, policy development, and administrative management.
