COURSE CURRICULUM

This MMus performance program is structured as a two-year curriculum that combines advanced instrumental study, ensemble participation, academic coursework, and structured performance training. In the first year, students complete foundational requirements including MUS503 (Introduction to Graduate Study and Music Bibliography), the first-year recital through MUS588, chamber music (MUS581), major instrument study (MUS545), and participation in approved large ensembles such as orchestra, wind symphony, or choir. These experiences are designed to build technical mastery, ensemble awareness, and interpretive depth while integrating students into the School’s broader performance community. The second year continues this training with ongoing chamber music and instrument study requirements, along with continued ensemble participation. Students also engage in advanced academic and theoretical coursework drawn from areas such as analysis, aesthetics, performance practice, musicology, and contemporary music studies. These courses strengthen critical thinking and contextual understanding of performance repertoire. A key component of the program is MUS598A (MMus Practicum), which provides structured performance-based assessment and integrates the student’s artistic development throughout the degree. Ensemble placement is determined based on both student specialization and departmental needs, with flexibility for substitutions approved by the supervisor. Overall, the program develops highly skilled performers through a balanced combination of rigorous practice, ensemble collaboration, and academic enrichment.
