COURSE CURRICULUM

The MMus in Performance (String Quartet) is a two-year graduate program designed to develop both individual musicianship and cohesive ensemble performance at a professional chamber music level. The program focuses on artistic growth within the quartet as well as the development of advanced interpretive, technical, and collaborative skills needed for a career in chamber music. Students refine their abilities through structured performance training, ensemble rehearsals, and outreach activities, while also engaging in academic coursework that supports their artistic development. In the first year, students complete foundational requirements including MUS503 (Introduction to Graduate Study and Music Bibliography), individual instruction through MUS540, major instrument study (MUS545Q), and participation in approved large ensembles. The second year continues applied training with MUS540 and MUS545Q, alongside additional academic coursework in areas such as analysis, music history, performance practice, and theory. A key component of the program is MUS598Q, which requires students to complete three ensemble recitals over the two-year residency as part of their practicum. Students also undergo a first-year jury assessment to evaluate progress. Ensemble placement is flexible and based on both student specialization and school needs, with possible substitutions approved by the supervisor. Overall, the program prepares students for professional chamber music careers through intensive performance experience, academic study, and ensemble collaboration.
