COURSE CURRICULUM

The MMus performance program is a structured, two-year graduate degree that combines advanced instrumental study, ensemble participation, academic coursework, and performance practice in a collaborative and professionally oriented environment. It is designed to develop high-level artistic, technical, and interpretive skills while preparing students for careers in professional music performance or further academic study. In the first year, students complete MUS503 (Introduction to Graduate Study and Music Bibliography) and MUS588 (First Year Recital), alongside ongoing individual instruction through MUS545 (Major Instrument Study), chamber music (MUS581), and participation in large ensembles such as orchestra, wind symphony, chorus, or jazz ensembles. The second year continues this performance training with MUS545 and MUS581, additional ensemble participation, and further academic or applied coursework in areas such as music theory, analysis, aesthetics, performance practice, and musicology. Students also complete MUS598A (MMus Practicum), which integrates performance development and applied learning. Ensemble placement is determined based on both student specialization and departmental needs, with flexibility for substitutions when appropriate. The program emphasizes continuous performance development through lessons, rehearsals, and recitals, supported by academic study in musical analysis and performance-related disciplines. Overall, the MMus performance program prepares students for professional careers as performers while strengthening their artistic identity, technical mastery, and interpretive depth.
