COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program in Studio Art requires students to complete a structured combination of intensive studio practice, seminars, and a final exhibition, with a strong emphasis on developing a professional-level artistic practice. Students engage in sequential coursework across major studio disciplines, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and digital media, each typically completed at both first- and second-year levels. This ensures progressive skill development and conceptual growth across multiple media. In addition to studio courses, students complete directed study and participate in first- and second-year seminars, which support critical discussion, theoretical understanding, and engagement with contemporary art practices. These seminars encourage reflection on artistic process and help students situate their work within broader cultural and historical contexts. A key requirement of the program is the MFA Degree Exhibition (ART 598), which represents the culmination of the student’s work and is normally presented at the end of the second year. This solo exhibition integrates the student’s creative development across all studio areas and serves as the primary basis for evaluation of the degree. The exhibition is also defended through a final oral examination, where students articulate the conceptual and technical foundations of their work. Overall, the program emphasizes sustained studio practice, interdisciplinary exploration, and professional preparation as an independent artist.
