COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Directing is a practice-intensive program designed for students with prior theatre experience, and applicants may be required to complete a diagnostic examination to ensure readiness for graduate-level study. Any identified deficiencies must be addressed before progression into advanced coursework. Students may also be required to complete comprehensive examinations before beginning practicum work. Each student is assigned a faculty supervisor who provides ongoing guidance in the development of their artistic practice and the planning of their thesis or practicum production. The program emphasizes hands-on directing experience, requiring students to direct multiple short projects and at least one full-length play prior to graduation. A major component of the degree is the MFA Practicum (THEA 524), which involves a fully realized production selected in consultation with faculty and supported by a detailed practicum report reflecting on process, interpretation, and outcomes. Coursework includes foundational studies in theatre research methods and theory, as well as advanced training in directing through practical courses such as directing practice, production experience, and advanced directing problems. Students also gain exposure to design fields, completing coursework in areas such as scene, lighting, or costume design, with optional substitution of related undergraduate courses under supervision. All projects are supervised by performance faculty, ensuring professional-level artistic development.
