COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering (MEng) in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria is a course-based graduate program designed to build advanced technical knowledge and applied engineering skills without requiring a thesis. The program requires students to complete 12 units of approved coursework, which may include a limited number of graduate-level electives such as ECE590 and, in some cases, up to 3 units of 400-level courses or even 300-level courses in exceptional circumstances, all subject to departmental and faculty approval. In addition to coursework, students must complete a seminar course (ECE509), which helps develop professional communication and presentation skills in an academic and technical context. A major component of the program is the MEng project (ECE598), which carries 5.0 units and involves solving a practical engineering problem under the supervision of a faculty member. This project emphasizes applied learning and industry-relevant problem solving rather than original research. The project must follow faculty guidelines and is evaluated through a formal oral examination, where students present and defend their work before a committee. Overall, the MEng program is structured to prepare graduates for professional engineering careers by combining advanced coursework, applied project experience, and strong communication and analytical skills.
