COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering (MEng) in Building Envelopes and Structures (BEST) at the University of Victoria is a professionally oriented graduate program that combines advanced coursework with applied engineering practice in building science, structural systems, and sustainable construction. Students develop expertise in the design, analysis, and performance of building envelopes and structural systems through a structured set of technical and applied courses. The program includes core and elective options such as Building Science Case Studies (CIVE524), Advanced Building Envelope Design (CIVE551), and Engineering Engagement in Projects and Communities (CIVE571), allowing students to build a strong foundation in modern building technologies and sustainability principles. Students also complete a selection of advanced structural and infrastructure-focused courses, choosing from topics such as Advanced Mechanics of Solids (CIVE420), Green Building Design (CIVE450), Finite Element Method (CIVE522), and Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering (CIVE555), among others. A central requirement is the MEng Project in Civil Engineering (CIVE598), which typically spans two terms and involves solving a real-world engineering problem related to building envelopes or structures. The program also allows limited undergraduate-level advanced coursework and selected studies with approval. Overall, the BEST MEng prepares graduates for industry leadership roles in sustainable design, construction engineering, consulting, and building performance innovation.
