COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering in Biomedical Systems is a professionally oriented graduate program designed to provide advanced knowledge and practical experience in biomedical systems, medical devices, and healthcare engineering. The program focuses on applying principles of human physiology—from cellular mechanisms to complete organ systems—to the design and development of innovative medical technologies. All students are supervised by the program director and complete a structured set of core and elective courses. The core curriculum includes BME500 (Medical Device and System Design for Clinical Engineers), BME501 (Biosensors and Imaging for Medical Device Design), BME505 (Human Physiology and Systems), and BME520 (Human Factors and Usability Engineering for Medical Devices), ensuring strong interdisciplinary training in engineering, biology, and user-centered design. A key component of the program is BME596, a capstone project that allows students to apply their knowledge to a practical biomedical engineering challenge. In addition, students must complete 6 units of electives selected from a range of biomedical and engineering-related courses such as biomaterials, tissue engineering, bioprinting, microfluidics, musculoskeletal mechanics, nanoelectronics, and medical imaging technologies. The elective structure allows students to specialize in areas aligned with their interests and career goals. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in medical device development, healthcare technology, research, and biomedical innovation.
