COURSE CURRICULUM

The MEd in Indigenous Language Revitalization is a project-based graduate program designed to prepare students for leadership roles in supporting the revitalization, reclamation, and maintenance of Indigenous languages. The program combines academic coursework with applied, community-oriented practice, emphasizing culturally grounded approaches to language education and revitalization. Students are required to complete core courses including IED510 (Leadership and Governance for Language Revitalization), IED572 (Indigenous Epistemologies), and IED594 (Seminar on Project or Thesis Development), which provide foundational knowledge in leadership, Indigenous ways of knowing, and project design. In addition, students select one course from Linguistics for Language Revitalization (IED501 or LING501), one from Global Contexts of Language Revitalization (IED577 or LING577), one from Indigenous Research Methods or Community-Based Initiatives (IED530, IED531, or LING531), and one from Indigenous Language Pedagogies or Additional Language Learning (IED520, IED557, IED574, or LING557). The program culminates in IED598, a 4.5-unit Major Project that integrates research and practice to address a real-world issue in Indigenous language revitalization, such as developing teaching resources, programs, or community initiatives. A minimum grade of B+ is required in all courses, ensuring strong academic performance. Overall, the program blends theory, pedagogy, and applied work to equip graduates for impactful professional practice in Indigenous language education and revitalization.
