COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Education (MEd) program in Curriculum Studies at the University of Victoria requires a minimum of 15.0 units of coursework and is designed to support educators in developing advanced understanding of curriculum theory and practice. The program combines core courses, research training, electives, and a final project, along with a comprehensive examination that may be written and/or oral. Students begin with foundational courses such as EDCI531 (Introduction to Curriculum as Discourse) and EDCI532 (Emerging Trends and Topics in Curriculum Studies), which explore how curriculum is shaped by social, political, and educational discourses. A strong emphasis is placed on critical analysis, encouraging students to examine both intended and unintended effects of curriculum planning, implementation, teaching, and assessment in real-world contexts. Students must also complete a research methods course, choosing either EDCI580 (Qualitative Research Methods) or EDCI581 (Research Methodologies in Education), to support their inquiry skills. The program includes a project component, beginning with a proposal and literature review (EDCI598A) and culminating in a final project (EDCI598B), allowing students to investigate issues relevant to their professional practice. In addition, 6.0 units of electives are completed in consultation with a supervisor. Overall, the program prepares educators to become reflective, ethical, and critically informed practitioners.
