COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Education in Coaching Studies (MEd CS) at the University of Victoria, project-based option, is a structured graduate program designed to develop advanced coaching knowledge and applied professional skills in sport and physical education. The program includes a set of core courses covering key areas such as skill acquisition, exercise physiology, sport and recreation administration, applied sport psychology, coaching effectiveness, research methods, biomechanics, and current issues in coaching studies. These courses provide a strong interdisciplinary foundation that connects scientific principles with practical coaching applications. In addition to core coursework, students complete elective courses that allow them to tailor their learning to specific interests within coaching, sport science, or related fields. A major requirement of the program is the completion of a project (EPHE598), where students apply research and theoretical knowledge to a practical coaching-related problem, demonstrating their ability to integrate learning into real-world contexts. The program also includes two co-operative education work terms (EPHE801 and EPHE802), which provide valuable hands-on professional experience in coaching or related environments. These placements help students apply their academic learning in practice while developing leadership and reflective coaching skills. Overall, the program is designed to prepare experienced coaches for advanced professional roles by combining scientific knowledge, applied practice, and experiential learning.
