COURSE CURRICULUM

The MASc in Mechanical Engineering is a research-based graduate program designed to provide advanced training in mechanical engineering through coursework, seminars, and a major thesis. The program is individually structured for each student, with the supervisory committee working closely with the student to determine a suitable program of study. Additional coursework may be required depending on the student’s background, and in some cases, senior undergraduate courses may be included to address knowledge gaps or strengthen foundational skills. Students must complete 7.5 units of coursework, which may include up to 1.5 units of MECH590 (not directly related to the thesis topic) and up to 1.5 units of 400-level courses. With approval, students may also take relevant courses from other departments to support their research focus. A key requirement is MECH595 (Seminar), worth 1.5 units, where students present their thesis research during the second year and attend at least six seminars per term, totaling 36 seminars over two years. The central component of the degree is MECH599, a 9.0-unit MASc thesis involving original research or creative design in mechanical engineering under faculty supervision. Overall, the program emphasizes independent research, academic development, and professional engagement, preparing graduates for careers in engineering research, industry innovation, or further doctoral studies.
