COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Applied Science (MASc) in Civil Engineering is a research-focused graduate program that allows students to pursue advanced study and independent research in a specialized area of civil engineering under the supervision of a faculty member. The program also supports creative and applied design work, depending on the student’s research focus and the guidance of their supervisory committee. A central component of the degree is the completion of a research thesis, which demonstrates original scholarly contribution to the field. In addition to thesis work, students must complete a minimum of 6 units of approved coursework, which must include at least one graduate-level CIVE 500-level course or higher (excluding CIVE 590). Students also complete CIVE 595 (Sustainability Seminars I), which provides exposure to current issues in sustainable engineering practice. The MASc thesis (CIVE 599) carries 9.0 units and forms the core of the program. Students may also take directed studies (CIVE 590), with limited repeat credit, and are restricted in the number of 400-level and external graduate courses they can take, ensuring a strong civil engineering focus. Overall, the program develops advanced technical knowledge, research capability, and problem-solving skills, preparing graduates for careers in engineering research, consulting, innovation, or further doctoral studies in civil engineering and related fields.
