COURSE CURRICULUM

The thesis-based Master of Arts (MA) program in Sociology is typically designed for completion in about two years of full-time study, although students enrolled in a Co-operative Education option may take closer to three years, and part-time students may require three to four years depending on their course load and enrolment pattern. The program provides advanced training in sociological theory, research design, and both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, preparing students for independent scholarly work. Core requirements include courses in intermediate social statistics, qualitative research methods, and a thesis (SOCI 599), which is the central component of the degree and involves original research conducted under faculty supervision. In addition, students select courses in sociological theory, choosing between foundations of sociological explanations or current issues in social theory. The program also includes a range of topical seminars that reflect departmental research strengths, such as cultural, social and political thought, contemporary sociology, gender and racialization, ecology and social movements, health and aging, and crime and law. Students further develop their methodological expertise through advanced qualitative research courses and may take an additional elective course from sociology or related disciplines. Overall, the program is structured to provide both theoretical depth and methodological rigor while supporting specialized research aligned with students’ academic interests and career goals.
