COURSE CURRICULUM

Physical Education at the University of Victoria is a research-focused graduate program designed to help students develop advanced knowledge in curriculum development and instructional strategies within physical education. The program provides a flexible structure that allows students to design a course of study aligned with their academic and professional interests while building strong foundations in research and pedagogy. Core requirements include courses in research methods and a graduate seminar, which help students develop essential academic writing, analysis, and communication skills. Students also select two courses from specialized areas such as physiological, psychological, neuroscientific, health promotion, or pedagogical issues in exercise, physical activity, and health, enabling them to gain interdisciplinary perspectives. In addition, students complete a research methods course in either quantitative or qualitative approaches, or another approved methodology course, to strengthen their ability to conduct independent research. The program includes elective coursework that allows further specialization based on individual goals. The degree culminates in a thesis (EPHE599), which involves conducting original research under faculty supervision and submitting a written document that is defended in an oral examination. Overall, the MA in Physical Education prepares graduates for advanced teaching roles, curriculum development positions, and further academic study by integrating theory, research, and applied educational practice.
