COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Musicology with Performance (project option) is a graduate program designed for students who combine strong academic interests in musicology with advanced performance skills on their instrument. It integrates scholarly study with practical performance training, allowing students to develop both analytical and artistic expertise. The program begins with core coursework such as MUS500 (Analytical Topics and Techniques), MUS503 (Introduction to Graduate Study and Music Bibliography), and MUS533 (Graduate Forum in Musicology), which establish a foundation in research methods and musicological inquiry. Students also undertake MUS540 (Individual Tuition) across both years to maintain continuous performance development. In the second year, students complete MUS534 (Advanced Research Forum in Musicology) and additional performance and ensemble requirements, which may include participation in university orchestras, choirs, chamber music, or jazz ensembles depending on their instrument and program needs. Students further complete elective coursework in areas such as music history, theory, aesthetics, and analysis, allowing for academic specialization. The program culminates in MUS596, a lecture-recital that combines scholarly research with live performance, demonstrating the relationship between musicological study and artistic interpretation. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in higher education, performance, and research by integrating academic scholarship with sustained professional-level musical practice.
