COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Linguistics is a 15-unit, thesis-based graduate program designed to provide students with advanced training in linguistic theory and research, while allowing specialization in a chosen area of study. The program combines coursework with independent research and is intended to equip students with strong analytical and methodological skills in linguistic analysis. All students complete a set of core and elective requirements drawn from key subfields of linguistics. This includes selecting courses from syntax, morphology, and phonology, such as LING503 or LING508 for syntax, LING504 for morphology, and LING505 or LING510 for phonology, ensuring a broad foundation in core linguistic domains. In addition, students complete 4.5 units of other graduate-level Linguistics courses, allowing further specialization and depth in their area of interest. A central component of the program is LING599, the MA Thesis worth 7.5 units, in which students conduct original research under faculty supervision and contribute to scholarly knowledge in linguistics. Throughout the program, students are also expected to fulfill additional graduate requirements such as a language requirement, presenting their research at a conference or colloquium, and defending a thesis proposal as well as the final thesis. Overall, the program prepares students for advanced academic study and research careers in linguistics.
