COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Indigenous Language Revitalization is a thesis-based program designed to prepare students as advanced language scholars and leaders in efforts to support the revitalization, reclamation, and maintenance of Indigenous languages. The program requires students to complete a set of core and elective graduate courses that combine leadership training, Indigenous knowledge systems, research methods, and applied language pedagogy. Core courses include IED510 (Leadership and Governance for Language Revitalization), IED572 (Indigenous Epistemologies), and IED594 (Seminar on Project or Thesis Development). Students also select one course from Linguistics for Language Revitalization (IED501 or LING501), one from Global Contexts of Language Revitalization (IED577 or LING577), one from Indigenous Research Methods or Community-Based Initiatives (IED530, IED531, or LING531), and one from Indigenous Language Pedagogies or Additional Language Learning (IED520, IED557, IED574, or LING557). In addition, students must complete IED599, a 6.0-unit thesis involving original research under supervision. A minimum grade of B+ is required in all courses to maintain good standing in the program. Overall, the curriculum combines theoretical knowledge, community engagement, and applied research, ensuring graduates are well-equipped to contribute to Indigenous language revitalization in academic, community, and leadership contexts.
