COURSE CURRICULUM

This MA program in Greek and Roman Studies is a thesis-based degree that provides advanced training in the classical world, combining literature, history, philosophy, art, and archaeology. In the first year, students complete foundational coursework across key areas of ancient studies, including Greek Literature, Greek History, Latin Literature, Roman History, Ancient Art and Archaeology, and Ancient Philosophy. Students must achieve a minimum grade of B+ in at least three of these subjects, ensuring strong academic competence across multiple disciplines. Alongside this, they take GRS500, a pro-seminar focused on research methods and scholarly practices that prepares them for advanced academic inquiry. Students may also take up to 3.0 units of graduate coursework from other departments, provided they receive approval, allowing for interdisciplinary or technical skill development relevant to their research. At the end of the first year, candidates are examined in their three selected fields of study to assess their overall knowledge and readiness for thesis work. In the second year, students focus entirely on GRS599, the MA thesis worth 6.0 to 9.0 units, where they conduct original research under supervision. This structure ensures both broad classical training and specialized research expertise, culminating in an in-depth scholarly thesis.
