COURSE CURRICULUM

Graduates of the MA in Geography program will leave with advanced knowledge and research skills that prepare them to engage thoughtfully and effectively with the complex human and environmental issues shaping today’s world. Throughout the program, students will acquire a deep understanding of fundamental concepts and methodological approaches in one or more major domains of geography, such as human geography, coastal systems, geomatics, or sustainability. This foundational knowledge is applied in the development and execution of a substantial independent research project, in which students design, carry out, and communicate original research that contributes to the field of geography. The program places a strong emphasis on research dissemination, encouraging students to present their work through written, oral, and graphic formats tailored to academic, professional, and community audiences. In doing so, students develop strong communication skills that are essential for both academic and applied careers. Collaboration is another central element of the program. Students are encouraged to work respectfully and constructively with faculty, peers, and external research partners, including community organizations, policymakers, and interdisciplinary teams. These experiences help students build meaningful professional relationships and learn to navigate the collaborative nature of contemporary research environments. The program also emphasizes the ethical responsibilities of researchers. Students gain insight into the role of the geographer not only as an academic or analyst but also as a socially responsible practitioner. They are trained to recognize and address the ethical dimensions of research design, data collection, community engagement, and knowledge sharing. By the time they complete the program, MA Geography graduates will be equipped to make informed, ethical, and impactful contributions in fields ranging from academic research and education to public policy, urban planning, and environmental advocacy.
