COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MSc) in Environmental Studies is a research-intensive graduate program designed to develop strong theoretical, methodological, and practical skills for addressing complex environmental challenges. The program begins with foundational courses, ES500 and ES501, which introduce students to key environmental theories, research methods, and essential skills needed for advanced study. Students also take a research colloquium (ES503), where they engage in academic discussions and present developing research ideas in a collaborative setting. A key early milestone is ES593, which supports students in preparing their thesis proposal and refining their research direction under faculty guidance. The central requirement of the degree is ES599, a major research thesis that involves independent investigation into an approved environmental topic and contributes original knowledge to the field. In addition to core requirements, students complete elective courses totaling 3.0 units, which may be chosen from within or outside the School with supervisor approval, with a limit on 400-level coursework. The program also includes a mandatory three-day field camp at the beginning of the degree, providing hands-on experience in environmental field methods and collaboration. Overall, the program emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, field-based experience, and original research, preparing graduates for careers in environmental research, policy, and applied sustainability work.
