COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) in Educational Studies at the University of Victoria is a flexible, research-focused program that allows students to tailor their studies according to their academic interests under the guidance of a faculty supervisor. The program consists of a total of 15.0 units, combining core coursework, electives, and a major research thesis. Students are required to complete foundational courses such as EDCI514 (Educational Discourses), which examines key ideas and debates shaping education, and EDCI581 (Research Methodologies in Education), which provides essential skills for conducting academic research. In addition, students complete 4.5 units of elective courses selected in consultation with their supervisor to align with their chosen area of specialization. The central component of the program is the thesis (EDCI599), worth 7.5 units, where students conduct independent, in-depth research on a topic of interest and contribute original knowledge to the field of education. The thesis must be successfully defended in an oral examination. The program limits the number of lower-level courses to ensure academic rigor and advanced study.
