COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Art History and Visual Studies is structured as a research-intensive program requiring a total of 15 units, with a strong emphasis on theoretical training, academic writing, and independent scholarly research. All students begin with two core compulsory courses: AHVS 501 (Colloquium in Theories and Practices), which introduces key theoretical approaches and critical debates in art history and visual studies, and AHVS 509 (Workshop in Art Historical Writing), which develops advanced academic writing and research communication skills. These foundational courses ensure students gain a strong grounding in both conceptual frameworks and scholarly practice. A central requirement of the program is the AHVS 598 Research Paper, which is a major independent project allowing students to conduct in-depth research on a topic of their choice under faculty supervision. In addition to these core components, students complete approximately 7.5 units of additional coursework, selected in consultation with their research interests and approved by the department. These courses are typically drawn from AHVS graduate seminars, with a limited number allowed from 400-level or related non-AHVS disciplines to support interdisciplinary study. The program structure is flexible but academically rigorous, encouraging students to tailor their coursework toward their specific research focus while building expertise in art history and visual analysis. Overall, it prepares students for advanced research, doctoral study, or professional roles in cultural, museum, and academic settings.
