COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) in Applied Theatre program includes a structured combination of research training, theoretical study, and flexible culminating options in either a thesis or a project-based format. Students begin by completing core courses in methods and materials of theatre research, theory for theatre research, and research methods in applied theatre, which together provide a strong foundation in both academic inquiry and applied practice. In addition, students take 4.5 units of elective courses selected from Theatre Department offerings or related disciplines, with approval from the Graduate Adviser. Up to 3.0 units of these electives may be at the 300 or 400 level, allowing some flexibility depending on academic background and research interests. Students then choose between two completion pathways. In the thesis option, they complete THEA 599, a 6.0-unit research thesis that is submitted and defended orally as part of the Faculty of Graduate Studies requirements. In the project-based option, students complete directed studies along with THEA 598, a major essay that is prepared under faculty supervision, orally defended, and developed into a work suitable for academic publication or conference presentation. Both pathways emphasize critical research, reflective practice, and applied theatre methodologies, preparing graduates for professional, academic, or community-based careers in theatre and related fields.
