COURSE CURRICULUM

Kinesiology at the University of Victoria is designed around an inquiry-based learning approach that allows students to explore specialized topics in human movement, exercise science, and health under the guidance of a faculty supervisor. The program offers flexibility for students to focus on areas aligned with their academic and professional interests while developing strong research skills. Core requirements include coursework in research methods and a graduate seminar, which help students build a strong foundation in academic inquiry and scholarly communication. Students then select from advanced topic areas such as physiological, psychological, neuroscientific, health promotion, or pedagogical issues related to exercise, physical activity, and health. In addition, students complete a research methods course in either quantitative or qualitative analysis, or an approved equivalent, to strengthen their methodological expertise. The program also includes elective courses that allow further specialization. For completion, students choose between two final pathways: a research project or a thesis. The project option emphasizes applied research, while the thesis involves more extensive independent research and requires an oral defense. Overall, the MA in Kinesiology prepares students for advanced careers in health sciences, research, and professional practice, as well as further doctoral studies by developing strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills.
