COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) in Philosophy is a research-focused graduate program that combines structured coursework with a significant independent research component. The program is designed to develop advanced skills in philosophical analysis, critical thinking, and academic writing through a balance of seminars, a practicum, and a major research project. Students are required to complete PHIL591 (Research Methods Seminar), which introduces key methodological approaches in philosophical research and prepares students for independent scholarly work. They also complete PHIL592 (Professional Development Practicum), which focuses on building transferable professional skills such as communication, academic presentation, and career preparation. A central requirement of the degree is PHIL598 (Major Research Project), where students produce a substantial piece of original philosophical research under faculty supervision. In addition, students must complete 7.5 units of coursework in philosophy, with the option—subject to approval—to take up to 1.5 units in related disciplines outside the Philosophy Department. This coursework allows students to deepen their expertise in specific areas of philosophical study while broadening interdisciplinary understanding. The program concludes with a required oral examination, during which students defend their research project and demonstrate mastery of their topic. Overall, the degree prepares graduates for advanced academic study, professional programs, and careers requiring strong analytical reasoning.
