COURSE CURRICULUM

The project-based MA option in History is designed as a structured program combining core methodological training, field-based learning, and a substantial major research paper. Students are required to complete foundational courses including HSTR500 (Historiography), which introduces key approaches to the writing and interpretation of history, and HSTR550 (Research Methods for Masters Project), which develops essential skills for conducting graduate-level historical research. The central component of the program is HSTR598, the MA Major Research Paper, a 6.0-unit project that allows students to pursue independent research on a focused historical topic under academic supervision. In addition to these core requirements, students complete 3 units of Geographical Field Courses, 1.5 units of Topical Field Courses, and a further 1.5 units of either Geographical or Topical Field Courses, providing flexibility to explore specialized themes and regions. Importantly, at least 1.5 units must focus on a geographical area outside the region covered in the major research paper, ensuring broader comparative and global historical understanding. This structure balances theoretical grounding, methodological training, and applied research, enabling students to develop strong analytical, interpretive, and research skills while engaging deeply with specific historical contexts and themes within a flexible yet rigorous academic framework.
