COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in French and Francophone Studies requires completion of a minimum of 15 units of graduate credit and offers two pathways: a project-based option or a thesis option, with the possibility of pursuing a concentration in Cultural, Social & Political Thought. In the project-based option, students must complete FRAN500A (Introduction to Theory and Research Methods) and FRAN500B (Application of Research Methods), totaling 3 units, along with 7.5 units of coursework. Of these, at least 6 units must be at the graduate level, with up to 1.5 units allowed outside the program and up to 1.5 units at the senior undergraduate level within the discipline. Students must also complete FRAN598, a 4.5-unit Major Research Project consisting of a 40–50 page paper and an oral defence, with the topic approved by both the Supervisory and Graduate Studies Committees. In the thesis option, students complete the same core research courses (3 units) but only 4.5 units of coursework, with at least 3 units at the graduate level and similar allowances for external and undergraduate courses. They must also complete FRAN599, a 7.5-unit thesis of 80–100 pages with an oral defence, requiring formal proposal approval and oversight for any significant changes.
