COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) in English at the University of Victoria offers two pathways: a project-based option and a thesis-based option (the latter restricted to students in the CSPT concentration). The program is designed to develop advanced skills in literary analysis, research, and critical theory through a combination of coursework and a substantial final project. Students begin with a required course in research methods and professional development (ENSH500), which builds foundational skills in academic writing, research design, and scholarly practice. They then complete 7.5 units of advanced coursework selected from a range of English studies graduate seminars (ENSH501–ENSH590), allowing them to explore different literary periods, genres, and theoretical approaches. The degree culminates in a 6.0-unit Master’s Essay or Project (ENSH598), which is a major research-based work of up to 10,000 words or equivalent in digital or editorial form, including notes and bibliography. This final project is typically an expanded and revised version of earlier coursework and is completed under the supervision of a faculty committee. It allows students to demonstrate independent research ability and contribute original insights to the field. Overall, the program prepares graduates for further academic study or professional careers requiring strong analytical, writing, and research skills.
