COURSE CURRICULUM

The Public History MA stream follows the same admission requirements as the MA in History, although applicants with significant experience in community-based or professional historical work may be considered even if they do not fully meet the standard academic criteria. The program requires a minimum of 15 units of study and combines academic coursework, practical training, and a major applied research project. Students complete 3 units of Cultural Heritage Courses selected from AHVS 486A–489L, along with HSTR515A (Public History), which introduces key concepts and practices in the field. A central requirement is HSTR597, the Public History Stream Research Project worth 6.0 units, which integrates academic research with practical public history output. In addition, students must complete 4.5 units of graduate-level History courses, with a strong recommendation to take HSTR500. These may include up to 1.5 units of field school courses, and GMST589 may be taken in place of 1.5 units of History coursework. The program also includes a required work-experience component, ensuring students gain hands-on professional training in real-world public history settings. Flexibility is provided in some cases, allowing substitutions such as language courses or related graduate or upper-level undergraduate courses with approval. At least 12 units must be completed at the graduate level, ensuring strong academic depth alongside practical engagement.
