COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) in Leadership Studies at the University of Victoria is a thesis-based graduate program requiring 15.0 units of study, including a major research thesis (ED-D599) and an oral examination. The program is designed to develop advanced understanding of leadership theory, critical thinking, and research skills focused on social justice, education, and organizational change. Students begin by selecting a core course from areas such as critical theories of adult education, leadership and social justice, anti-oppressive practices, or leadership discourses. They also complete a research methodology course such as educational research apprenticeship or qualitative research methods, which prepares them for independent scholarly inquiry. In addition, students take 6.0 units of advanced leadership courses covering topics like politics and policy-making in organizations, global leadership perspectives, leadership and diversity, gender and leadership, narrative leadership studies, and knowledge democracy. A limited number of elective courses outside the department may also be taken with approval, provided they are relevant to the student’s research focus. The program culminates in a 6.0-unit thesis that involves original research in leadership studies, guided by a faculty supervisor and examined through an oral defense. Overall, the program emphasizes critical analysis, research development, and the application of leadership theory to real-world social and organizational challenges.
