COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) in Economics at the University of Victoria offers both thesis-based and project-based (extended essay) options, each requiring a minimum of 15 units of coursework. The program provides a strong foundation in core areas such as microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics through courses like ECON500, ECON501, and ECON545. In the thesis-based option, students complete these core courses along with 6 units of electives and a research thesis (ECON599), which involves an in-depth investigation of a chosen topic under the guidance of a supervisory committee. The thesis must be defended in a final oral examination. In the project-based option, students instead complete an extended essay (ECON598) along with 7.5 units of electives, allowing for a more coursework-focused pathway. Students may also take directed studies (ECON595) to explore specialized topics not covered in regular courses. With departmental approval, up to 3 units of 400-level or courses from other departments may be included. The program may also offer a co-operative education option, requiring additional coursework. Most students complete the program within approximately 28 months, though the maximum time allowed is five years. Overall, the program combines theoretical knowledge, quantitative skills, and research experience to prepare graduates for careers or further academic study.
