COURSE CURRICULUM

The Juris Doctor and Indigenarum Doctor program at the University of Victoria Faculty of Law is structured as a multi-year professional degree with a strong foundation in first-year core legal education followed by flexible upper-year study. In the first year, all courses are compulsory for full-time students. Part-time students must complete at least 7 units in their first year, including core courses such as LAW104 Law, Legislation and Policy and LAW112I Transsystemic Legal Processes, Research, Writing. Any remaining first-year requirements must be completed in the second year of study for part-time students. In the second, third and fourth years, students progress into more flexible academic planning, with course selections approved by the Dean or their delegate. These upper-year programs allow students to tailor their legal education while meeting credit and academic requirements. Full-time students must enrol in between 14.5 and 16.5 units per academic year, while part-time students must enrol in 6.0 to 14.0 units, with additional limits on per-term course loads to ensure balanced study progression. Students may not exceed or fall below specified unit limits without special permission. To graduate, students must successfully complete at least 43.5 units across the second, third and fourth years. This structure ensures a strong foundational understanding of legal principles in the first year while allowing deeper specialization and academic flexibility in later years of the program.
