COURSE CURRICULUM

The Diploma in Indigenous Language Revitalization (DILR) is a two-year program designed to help students build their Indigenous language skills, understand the contexts for language revitalization, and develop foundational teaching abilities. In the first year, students choose between completing a Certificate in Indigenous Language Proficiency or a Certificate in Indigenous Language Revitalization along with additional language coursework. This provides a solid base in language skills and prepares students for more specialized study in the second year. The second year focuses on a combination of required courses and electives that cover teaching preparation, practical experience, and advanced language learning. Students must complete courses such as the Indigenous Language Teaching Preparation Seminar and the Teaching and Learning Practicum, which offer hands-on training in language instruction. Additionally, students select several courses from options that include immersive language learning, mentorship programs, language assessment, and methods for language reclamation. These courses are designed to deepen understanding of language revitalization techniques and support the preservation and teaching of Indigenous languages within communities. The program also includes opportunities to study special topics and conduct special studies in Indigenous education, broadening students' perspectives on cultural and educational contexts. To complement their language studies, students complete approved English courses to enhance their communication skills. Overall, the diploma balances theoretical knowledge with practical skills, preparing graduates to contribute effectively to Indigenous language preservation and revitalization efforts. The program’s flexible structure allows learners to tailor their studies to their community’s needs and their own goals, ensuring that they gain relevant experience and expertise.
