COURSE CURRICULUM

The combined Visual Arts and Computer Science program at UVic is a limited-enrolment interdisciplinary degree that integrates studio-based art training with computer science education, leading to either a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) or a Bachelor of Science (BSc). In Year 1, students build foundational skills in both disciplines through core studio courses including ART103 Foundation Drawing and Painting, ART104 Sculpture and Material Methods, ART105 Photography and Video Art, and ART106 Core Media Technologies and Arts, alongside CSC110 and CSC115 in programming, MATH122 Logic and Foundations, STAT255 Statistics, and either MATH100 or MATH109 Calculus. Students also complete electives, including writing requirements if needed. In Year 2, the program introduces core computer science topics such as algorithms, computer architecture, software development methods, and matrix algebra, while students continue developing artistic skills through ART155 and studio electives across drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, digital media, and video art. In Year 3, students advance in both streams, taking upper-level visual arts studio courses alongside computer science subjects like algorithms, operating systems, databases, and human-computer interaction, with additional electives for flexibility. In Year 4, students complete advanced studio work, CSC 400-level courses, and computer graphics, allowing specialization in both creative and technical areas. Overall, the program develops hybrid expertise in artistic practice, computational systems, and digital media, preparing graduates for careers in fields such as game design, UX/UI, animation, interactive media, and software development.
