COURSE CURRICULUM

The Statistics program at the University of Victoria is designed to develop strong mathematical, computational, and analytical skills for understanding and interpreting data. In Years 1 and 2, students build a solid foundation through courses in programming, calculus, linear algebra, and probability and statistics. They complete key mathematics sequences in calculus and matrix algebra, along with introductory probability and statistical methods, while also choosing an applied computing course such as data science, programming, or computer-assisted mathematics. This stage ensures students develop both theoretical understanding and practical computational skills needed for advanced study. A significant number of electives allows flexibility to explore other academic interests. In Years 3 and 4, the program focuses on advanced statistical theory and applied techniques, including mathematical modelling, mathematical statistics, regression analysis, sampling techniques, and experimental design. Students also complete additional upper-level courses in mathematics or statistics to deepen their specialization. Electives in later years allow further academic customization based on career goals or research interests. Overall, the program emphasizes critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and data-driven problem-solving. Graduates are well prepared for careers in data science, analytics, finance, government, health research, and technology, as well as for graduate studies in statistics, mathematics, or related quantitative fields where strong analytical expertise is essential.
