COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physics program at the University of Victoria is a structured and rigorous degree designed to build strong foundations in mathematics, computation, and core areas of physics over four years. In Year 1, students begin with introductory physics courses along with essential mathematics such as calculus, while also choosing supporting science courses in biology, chemistry, earth sciences, or microbiology. Programming skills are introduced through computing courses, and students complete additional electives to broaden their academic base. In Year 2, the focus shifts to fundamental physics concepts including quantum physics, electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, experimental physics, and computational physics, supported by advanced calculus, matrix algebra, and continued electives. Year 3 deepens theoretical and analytical understanding through classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and electromagnetism, along with laboratory training and optional specialization in areas like optics or atomic physics, supported by differential equations. In Year 4, students take advanced upper-level physics or astronomy courses and select mathematics electives such as complex variables, numerical methods, and mathematical modelling to strengthen analytical expertise. Additional electives allow further academic flexibility and specialization. Overall, the program prepares students for careers in research, technology, engineering, data science, and graduate studies by combining theoretical depth, mathematical rigor, and practical experimental experience.
